Landmark Data Breach Exposes 800,000 Insurance Records

Landmark Admin, a key provider of administrative services to several major US insurance carriers, has disclosed a significant data breach that occurred in May 2024. The breach exposed the sensitive information of more than 800,000 insurance customers.

A third-party administrator for insurance firms, Landmark Admin offers back-office services including processing new business and handling claims for large carriers.

Landmark works with big insurance companies including American Monumental Life, Pellerin Life, American Benefit Life, Liberty Bankers Life, Continental Mutual, and Capitol Life.

In May 2024, Landmark Admin suffered a data breach that exposed the personal information of approximately 800,000 people. The disclosed data contained sensitive information such as names, Social Security numbers, passport numbers, and driver’s license numbers.

Sensitive information, including bank account details, routing numbers, medical records, health insurance policies, and life and annuity policy details, exposed certain individuals to major risk.

According to the breach report, the first incident happened on May 13, when the IT team discovered unusual behaviour, causing authorities to unplug compromised systems and consult a third-party cybersecurity firm.

According to the investigation, hackers got access to Landmark’s network and encrypted and exfiltrated data. The attack continued from May 13 until June 17.

Landmark customers at risk of identity theft and fraud

The revelation of sensitive data makes this breach even more concerning. With access to Social Security numbers, driving licences, and passport information, fraudsters can perpetrate widespread fraud and identity theft.

The addition of bank account and health insurance information increases the risk of financial crimes and false claims even more. Because of the huge amounts of personal data it stores, the insurance business has long been a target for cyberattacks.

Landmark Admin is providing free identity theft protection to everyone impacted by this breach. Those whose personal information may have been compromised are receiving notification letters in waves through first-class mail.

A redacted version of this notification is accessible at ClassAction.org. To avoid similar accidents, Landmark Admin has increased data security by using advanced encryption techniques and strengthening overall network security.

The company informed Maine officials that 806,519 people were affected, including approximately 68,000 residents of Texas, according to filings in California and Texas.

The importance of sensitive health data makes the insurance industry and its affiliates a common target for cyberattacks. Two weeks ago, hackers extorted Globe Life after stealing data from over 5,000 individuals from one of its subsidiaries.

Affected individuals should keep close watch on their bank accounts and credit reports for any unusual behaviour, considering the sensitive nature of the stolen data. As of now, no group has claimed credit, making the nature of the attack unclear.
