Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) confirmed that the Ukrainian government’s official website has been hacked.
Although the digital portal for foreign audiences has been restored, the MFA has warned that temporary problems may still occur.
Earlier in the month, a cyber-attack on the website of the MFA resulted in the temporary takedown of the site and other government agencies.
The increased tensions surrounding Ukraine have left many suspecting Russia is behind these incidents, as cyberattacks on Ukraine’s critical infrastructure have previously been blamed on Russia. Ukraine’s power grid was attacked by a Russian threat group named Sandworm in December 2015, leaving thousands without power.
In 2016 Ukraine’s power grid was subject to a cyber-attack which saw left the northern part of Kiev without electricity.
With today’s increased tensions between the two nations, many fear we could see another attack such as this one.
The UK’s National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) issued a statement on 28 January urging organizations to act in response to the current situation in and around Ukraine. The NCSC has published guidance for UK organisations in an attempt to prevent cyber-attacks from harming infrastructure.
“The NCSC is committed to raising awareness of evolving cyber threats and presenting actionable steps to mitigate them. While we are unaware of any specific cyber threats to UK organizations in relation to events in Ukraine, we are monitoring the situation closely and it is vital that organizations follow the guidance to ensure they are resilient,”
